Amazon biedt excuus aan over fout

Grote commotie afgelopen weekend in de VS door een fout van Amazon.com. Een softwarefout leidde ertoe dat alle boeken over homo’s niet langer via de site beschikbaar waren. Diverse organisaties die de belangen van homo’s vertegenwoordigen ontdekten de fout razensnel en waren niet van de televisie te slaan met hun woede. De reden dat de situatie uit de hand liep had vooral te maken met de relatief trage reactie van Amazon.com. Pas een dag later werd de “fout” deels hersteld en kwam officieel excuus.

In het excuus stelt Amazon.com dat de fout niet alleen boeken over homo’s trof, maar in totaal bijna 60.000 boeken. Dat daarbij alle boeken in de rubriek “Gay and Lesbian” zaten noemt de online boekhandel puur toeval. De fout is nog altijd niet helemaal opgelost.

De officiele reactie: This is an embarrassing and ham-fisted cataloging error for a company that prides itself on offering complete selection. It has been misreported that the issue was limited to Gay & Lesbian themed titles – in fact, it impacted 57,310 books in a number of broad categories such as Health, Mind & Body, Reproductive & Sexual Medicine, and Erotica. Many books have now been fixed and we’re in the process of fixing the remainder as quickly as possible, and we intend to implement new measures to make this kind of accident less likely to occur in the future.
