Fortune noemt internetmiljardair aandachtsziek

Volgens Fortune was Broadcast.com een lucky shot. Volgens Cuban zelf trouwens ook, zo heeft hij meerdere keren laten weten. Op dit moment ziet het blad geen toekomstige hits voor Cuban. Hij zou volgens het blad een aandachtsziek persoon zijn: For him, it is not enough to be rich. He wants to be famous and influential, much as he might argue otherwise. He clearly feels the need to show the business world that he is more than a rabid sports nerd from a Pittsburgh suburb who cashed out at the top of the dot-com craze (thanks to a company that streamed live games over the web to other rabid sports nerds). Maar goed, ook dat bevestigt Cuban zelf.

In het artikel wordt weergegeven dat Cuban zich nog als een kind gedraagt, met allerlei voorbeelden. Once again Cubans timing was fortunate. Broadcast.com 1998 IPO was a smash. The stock was priced at $18 a share, but it climbed to $62 at the end of the first day. Cuban and Wagner spent the afternoon at a Wall Street bar, drinking shots every time Lou Dobbs mentioned the company name on CNN.

Dat is prima, maar ook als hyped.nl de huidige investeringen bekijkt van Cuban, die door Fortune als “matig” worden afgedaan, lijkt ook daar succes te zijn behaald. Zijn investering in de Dallas Mavericks heeft zich al ruim uitbetaald. Zowel in bekendheid voor Cuban als in financiele zin. Wat doet iemand die enorm veel geld met internet verdiende? 1. Dallas Mavericks (een succes, volgens hyped.nl, waarde van team bijna verdubbeld!)
Cuban paid $280 million for the team (and half of the American Airlines Center). The Mavs revenues grew from $40 million to $140 million under Cuban.

2. HDNet en HDNet films (nu nog succes, afgaande op de grote investeringen, maar wie weet?)
HDNet has 6.8 million subscribers. Its sister film studio has enlisted the likes of Steven Soderbergh to direct.

3. 2929 Productions (tot nu toe nog verliesgevend?)
Financed wide release of eight films, including George Clooneys Good Night, and Good Luck and James Grays We Own the Night.

4. Magnolia Pictures (redelijk succes)
Distributed indie films like Crazy Love and The Smartest Guys in the Room, based on Fortunes coverage of the Enron scandal.

5. Landmark Theaters (lastig om winstgevend te krijgen, maar wel toonaangevend)
With 282 screens, its one of the countrys largest and most innovative art-house theater chains.
